Comics: digital art for exhibition

Comics and cartoons, Conventions and events

Marko Ajdaric drops us a brief note about a new approach some of his fellow comics lovers in South America are trying out – digitally ‘signed’ art sent to them for display. The idea seems to be to find a way to show off comic artwork but in places where it previously wasn’t feasible to obtain original pages to display because of distance, insurance and so on. But with the web and high quality digital reproduction suddenly, if one is organised, it is possible to plan exhibits almost anywhere. Their first attempt is in Caxias do Sul, with more plans to extend the idea and have exhibitions in galleries and comic stores in other towns which previously wouldn't have been able to have the work of various international artists to display (and apologies if I get any details wrong here, there's a link but in Portuguese and what Marko has told me briefly to go on!).

Obviously it isn't the same as seeing the originals (and for several decades, well before the digital revolution, there has been debate in media studies over the role of the original and the copy in an era of mass, quality reproduction, but that is a whole other debate), but I must admit if it allows exhibitions of artists from anywhere in the world to be staged pretty much anywhere, bringing exhibitions to towns which would never normally get such a thing, then why not? A nice use of web and digital tech, but reaching beyond the virtual world of the web to have an actual physical exhibition people can wander round and enjoy. Among those they have persuaded to take part is our own great Carlos Ezquerra, who has sent them this recent Strontium Dog page pictured above (by Carlos, (c) Rebellion/2000 AD).
